Sony's Soneium Network Sparks Web3 Gaming and PlayStation Rumors

Sony has officially launched Soneium, a new Ethereum scaling network developed by its Singapore-based subsidiary, Sony BLS. While the network's creators are highlighting its potential to bring everyday users into the crypto world, the move has also ignited speculation about whether Sony's massive PlayStation gaming ecosystem could eventually integrate with the blockchain.

Beyond Film and Music: Soneium's Ambitions Include Gaming

Soneium, developed in collaboration with Startale Labs, aims to enhance experiences across various sectors, including film, music, and gaming. The network's website currently lists "gaming" as a key application category, fueling questions about potential tie-ins with PlayStation franchises like God of War, Uncharted, and Gran Turismo.

However, a Sony BLS spokesperson remained tight-lipped on any specific plans. "As for potential integrations with PlayStation, we're excited about the possibilities blockchain technology brings to gaming, but we don't have any specific updates to share on that front at this time," spokesperson said in a statement.

A History of Blockchain Exploration: Patents and "Super-Fungible Tokens"

This isn't Sony's first foray into blockchain. Prior to Soneium, the company filed patent applications related to tracking in-game assets using NFTs and even the concept of "super-fungible tokens," essentially bundles of NFT items.

Early Days: A Glimpse into Soneium's Gaming Ecosystem

Currently, around a dozen games are accessible on Soneium, most of which appear to be in early development. These include Derby Race, a "pick-to-earn" horse racing mini-app on Telegram, and OverTrip, a battle royale shooter incorporating meme coins and NFTs. It's important to note that these games are not developed by Sony or Startale Labs but by independent developers building on the permissionless Soneium network.
