Sony's Soneium Blockchain Debuts First Music NFT Collection with Coop Records

Soneium, the new Ethereum Layer 2 blockchain developed by Sony, has launched its first music NFT collection in partnership with Coop Records, a crypto-focused record label. This collaboration marks a significant step in Sony's exploration of blockchain technology for the music industry and aims to create a fairer, more transparent model for artists and fans.

Unreleased Tracks and a New Marketplace: The Debut Collection

The NFT music collection features a set of unreleased music from Tokyo-based producer NUU$HI, and is available on Soneium's NFT marketplace, Sonova. The 22-minute-long music NFT is priced at 0.000777 ETH (approximately $2.11 at the time of writing), and over 600 have already been minted.

Coop Records: Championing Fair Distribution in the Music Industry

Coop Records, a community-owned label that has already moved over 600 songs on-chain, is dedicated to addressing the issue of unfair profit distribution in the traditional music industry. By leveraging blockchain technology, Coop Records hopes to create a more equitable system for labels, streaming platforms, and, most importantly, artists.

"Crypto is finally entering the era where apps are the main focus," said Coop Records founder Cooper Turley in a recent post on X. "And with tokens at the center — creators and power users will be the biggest winners."

Soneium's Vision: Empowering Creators Through Blockchain

Soneium echoed this sentiment, stating that the collaboration with Coop Records aligns with the network's core goal of creating an ecosystem where creators receive the recognition and compensation they deserve.

Sony Block Solutions Labs, the Singapore-based unit of the Japanese conglomerate, has previously highlighted the potential of Soneium to protect intellectual property rights for creators and develop new mechanisms for fair profit-sharing.

The Internet for Entertainment: Music Takes Center Stage

Soneium, which launched its mainnet on January 14, is positioned as "the internet for entertainment," with a focus on music following this initial NFT drop. While Sony Music Group, which owns major labels like Columbia Records and RCA Records, has not yet announced any direct collaborations with Soneium, the potential for future integration remains.

According to the network's official data, Soneium has already accumulated over 248,000 accounts and 1.9 million total addresses participating in the blockchain.
